Continuing Fracture, Frame, Form

With the pieces I had made I just kept building the up layers, sometimes it work and at other times I would move the pieces around.

As I put these pieces up on the dryer I wanted to expand what I was doing and create another shape, so I started to transfer the pieces to the washing line, it seemed to fit into what I wanted to achieve within the set timed period.

As I have taken down the pieces I wanted to create finality to this piece, and so I decided to burn the pieces and that is what I have done. So as each piece came off the washing line I put the paper into the fire. It was a cathartic experience.
Furthermore I have expanded the images by working on them using Photoshop furthermore I have made a short film. I do not know whether or not this will open to be watched however I just wanted to extend this Task 2.
I have added all the images that I have taken, there are mixed up and each image piece has allowed to Form, to Frame and then to Fracture.

What I have decided to to do is to transfer all the imagery onto Powerpoint which will make viewing easier due to the amount.

Conclusion

For this Task 2 I looked at the imagery of wings especially dragonfly wings because they are quite distinctive in nature and in the beginning I was interested with the monochromatic image as I was just sketching using an ordinary ink pen. However as I researched the imagery of the dragonfly I noticed the references of colour, which has a gentle essence that I was interested in using.
The imagery of the dragonfly appealed to me because the wings are a form as part of the animal itself, Furthermore when looking at the wings detached from the body of the dragonfly the wings are also a frame because the wing is a rigid structure formed of relatively slender pieces, continuing this train of thought the fractured image of the wings have the characteristic appearance of a broken surface.
Once I had decided to use the dragonfly wings I reduced the plural of the wings down to wing. I continued to reduce the image further and to look deeper as if looking at the wing or rather parts of the wing under a microscope in sections. By using the image of the dragonfly wing I had considered the words, Frame, Form and Fracture on a literal level, and then I took into account the definitions of Form, Frame and Fracture as nouns and verbs.
The one definition of a Fracture that I was interested in as a noun is the characteristic appearance of a broken surface, as of a mineral. By drawing images as a section of a dragonfly wing as if viewed through a microscope, my materials where very basic tools of a pen and plain A4 paper to create some sketches. When looking at these pieces there are references to stain glass windows devoid of colour.
I decided to use paper as the basis of the task, because I have looked at the work of Hal Locke (b. 1959) especially the piece ‘Cardboard This piece is an installation which was a large architectural construction created from large flat pieces of card, which were then cut, painted, and then moulded and glued together that become the sculpture.
I extended the imagery by adding colour as a wash.  Furthermore I have cut out sections of the pieces that I have made, attempting to create a window through the pieces at one point within this task I was considering the idea of expending the idea of a book taken from Task 1. By creating a window I had an idea of creating a book that was continuous each page had an image that was reflected from the page before.
Whilst I continued to look at facets of the dragonfly wing I also have been researching the work of Franko B in conjunction with my studies within the MA in regards with another part of the course and researching and extending the idea of looking at blood cells under the microscope and stained.
On his website which is at http://www.franko-b.com there is a text that Franko B has written a text called ‘Untouchable’ in which he has just written words that are obviously very personal to him.
When reading this text I recognised that this is an area that I wanted to investigate in what and why I am interested in the imagery of the dragonfly wing or rather sections of the wing. Therefore I decided to not think about these issues but rather just write.
In writing this text I found that I did include aspects of the countryside and touched on area of my life in East Sussex where I was born and grew up I lived there until I was 32 years old, and the later times were very unhappy for me and yet the text I wrote was a positive one. This for me is a very important aspect within this Task, possibly the most positive aspect within this Task because since moving to Worcester I have moved on and now lead a better, more contented life since making the decision to move to Worcester. What is interesting is that when I was writing this text that I did not dwell on the unhappiest moments of my life, therefore in creating this text I found this a cathartic experience.
Furthermore I continued the research of this task by looking at the word One of the definitions of a Fracture as a noun is the characteristic appearance of a broken surface, as of a mineral. This verb I believed related to the extended idea of writing text regarding the subject matter of the dragonfly wings.
I spent time with the pieces I had created by generally looking at them, I strategically laid out the pieces to fit together and then deliberately spent time displacing the pieces. Whilst considering how I could develop these images I knew that I wanted to use these pieces was to construct, therefore I made the decision to use a dryer as a starting point I looked at the definitions of Form and the one of interest is to ‘Place in order; arrange, organise.’
With the pieces I had made I just kept building the up layers by adding them to the dryer, sometimes it work and at other times I would move the pieces around. As the piece developed I decided to transfer the pieces from the dryer to the washing line, in doing this I was able to extend the imagery by creating a new piece of imagery by recycling the pieces that I had made all this was achieved within the set timed period.
This task has allowed a continual extension of ideas therefore once I had finished arranging all the pieces on the washing line it was a completed process, however I felt that I could extend the idea of completion by burning the individual pieces of imagery, therefore as each piece came off the washing line I put the paper into the fire.
Throughout this task I have attempted to expand this task and the imagery as well as extending what the next stage could be created within the limited set time period. Therefore I have spent time removing the background imagery of the pieces using Photoshop furthermore I created a short film using Microsoft film maker as well putting the original photographs and the manipulated imagery onto a Powerpoint Presentation in doing this I am documenting the visual format the motto of this task ‘Frame, Frame, Fracture’ as well as the expansion of ideas and development that is reflected through this task.
This task has enabled me to recognise the developmental stages that I exercise when I am developing my own work; the format I usually use is to form, fracture and frame.
However within this Task I deviated by developing this task by the route of Fracture, frame and form this has enabled me to recognise that when I am embarking on a new project or idea that it I can open to a rearrangement of the words of Form, Frame and Fracture, and the definitions which allow growth and experimental within my practice.

Form, Frame, Fracture Task 2

FRAME, FORM, FRACTURE
SVE Studio Task 2 – Notes 4.4.2011

The initial interest in this project was the emphasis on the use of the words, and the idea of being bound in using these words in a certain specific sequence. There were six options to choose from.

Form, frame, fracture
Form, fracture, frame
Frame, form, fracture
Frame, fracture, form
Fracture, frame, form
Fracture, form, frame

Each word was given meanings as a noun and as a verb and I have to one of these sequences and decide on the appropriate definition. I have read through the definitions and I am still undecided which the best options are or really where to start so I am going to look at some artist’s work as a starting point.
Gilbert and George are of interest to because of their use of form, especially when looking at the definition of  FORM as a verb.
“To place in order: arrange; organise.”
When looking at the ‘The Urethra Postcard Art of Gilbert and George’ Exhibition was held from the 14th January – 19th February 2011 at the White Cube Gallery in London.
This exhibition is based on a collection of telephone sex cards, postcards and flyers all precisely placed together to produce a symbol of the urethra which is discussed at:  http://www.whitecube.com/exhibitions/gg%202011/XI/

“THE URETHRA POSTCARD PICTURES reveal Gilbert & George at their most intent and artistically all seeing. These new pieces are united, compositionally, by their elements comprising "an angulated version of the sign of urethra". This shape - a continuous rectangle of cards, with a single card in its central space - mimics the sexual symbol used by the one time theosophist C. W. Leadbetter (1853 - 1934) to accompany his signature, and as such proposes that this group of new art works is infused with a still confrontational libertarianism.”

 Framed: 34 5/8 x 48 7/16 in. (88 x 123 cm)

Continuing to look at the work of Gilbert and George and looking at the word FRAME and the definition as a noun.
“A rigid structure formed of relatively slender pieces, joined so as to surround sizable empty spaces or non-structural panels, and generally used as major support in building or engineering works, machinery, furniture etc.”
This noun does in a way fit in with the large works of Gilbert and George as shown below.

Accessed 4.4.2011
Even though these pieces are not for major support structures they are rigid structures formed from of slender joined together. Furthermore when looking at the word FRACTURE and the noun definition as a noun:
“The characteristic appearance of a broken surface, as of a mineral.”
When looking at the work of Gilbert and George and their large photo frame pieces and they looked at bodily fluids under the microscope and the created images using themselves often fractured and reconnected as kaleidoscope imagery as shown. Accessed 4.4.2011
Planed 2007 at http://www.whitecube.com/artists/gilbertandgeorge/

I am interested in imagery that is reflected under the microscope however I am still concentrating on using the imagery of dogs as masks using the human form because I want to finish a painting I have started and I am still researching and trying to find a way of using this imagery of blood cells as unique paintings rather than just copying them.

I have been looking at the work of Damien Hirst and the butterfly series
Kaleidoscope VII, 2004, Butterfly-wings and household gloss on canvas
Accessed 5.4.2011
I do struggle with the use of butterflies I have to admit, I don’t know whether or not these butterflies have died naturally I hope so, however I find the imagery stunning and references to stain glass windows are interesting and referring to the imagery of microscopic work I am going to look at imagery of insects viewed under the microscope.
Accessed 5.4.2011

This is an image of a hummingbird moth I think it is beautiful insect and I love the wings, it’s a lovely creature.
Accessed 5.4.2011

This is an image of a baldfaced hornet it’s just a stunning image of a animal that terrifies me actually, once again the fine details are incredible and the wings are still attractive to me.

I have started to look at wings and especially dragonfly wings, they are distinct and I am interested with the monochrome and yet there are splashes of colour, gentle colour, the reason I am interested in the idea of using dragonfly wings because this image is a form because it is a formed part of the dragonfly, the wings is frame because a wing is a rigid structure formed of relatively slender pieces, the fractured image of the characteristic appearance of a broken surface.

I have decided to use the dragonfly wings; however I have decided to reduce the plural of the wings down to wing. Then after looking at the wing as an individual piece I want to reduce the image further and to look deeper. As if looking at the wing or rather parts of the wing under a microscope at sections of the wing.

So with this in mind I looked at the definitions of Form, Frame and Fracture as nouns and verbs.

One of the definitions of a Fracture as a noun is the characteristic appearance of a broken surface, as of a mineral.
So I have started drawing some images that I think would be like viewing a section of a dragonfly wing as if viewed as if under a microscope, I have used pen and plain A4 paper to create some sketches. I think there are references to stain glass windows as if in a church without any colour.

I have decided to use paper as the basis of the task, because I have looked at the work of Hal Locke (b. 1959) especially the piece ‘Cardboard Palace’ 24 April - 2 June 2002, this piece was commissioned by Chisenhale Gallery, London.
This piece is an installation that is created as a architectural construction (4m x 11m x 20m). It was very large and visitors could move through a series of spaces. This piece was created from large flat pieces of card, which were then cut, painted, and then moulded and glued together to become the sculpture.

I decided to continue looking into imagery of close up imagery image of facets of areas of dragonfly wing. I have been looking at the work of Franko B in conjunction with my studies within the MA in regards with another part of the course and researching and extending the idea of looking at blood cells under the microscope and stained.
When looking on his website which is at http://www.franko-b.com
What I am interested in on this website is text that Franko B has written a text called ‘Untouchable’ in which he has just written words that are obviously very personal to him.

This text really interested because I want to investigate in what and why I am interested in the imagery of the dragonfly wing or rather sections of the wing. So I have decided to not think about these issues but rather just write.

Dragonfly

When I think of a dragonfly I think of many things some literal and some that belong in the world of fantasy, fairies, elves, pixies, secret, dream, reality,  bridge between the two worlds.  Flying, air, breathe, buzzing, fast, countryside,  beauty, hold an attraction, whizz around, ponds, streams, excitement when seen, vulnerable, transparent wings, patches of colour, luminous, graceful, dragon, countryside, east sussex, jewels, striations, patterns, blurring, spring, light, movement, stillness, bright, interesting, fascinating, unusual, not like butterflies, wasps, bees, flies, hold attention, unique, rare, dark and light, not threatening, stain glass, fractured images, long bodies, distracting, water, sunlight, long summer evenings, joy, lost childhood, memories, silence, watchful, still, gazing, wondrous, ponderous, black and white, garden party, quiet times, time to think, and time to make changes, god, nature, the world, part of the world, part of nature, unity, sex, birth, death, images in churches, Christ, creation, breathing, deity, understanding process, feeding, drinking, lily plants, reeds, flowers, sunshine, holidays, walks, Scotland, Ireland, Cross in Hand,  Heathfield, Lewes, green, water, deep, cool, green leaves, grass, tall grass, edges, mud, awareness of other animals, rustling, wind, transparent, lead, glass, solid, fragile, gold, silver, green, blue, red, mother, nature, pagan, rituals, sun, moon, sky, blue, twinkling , lens, capture, death, trees, roots, branches, nettles, brambles, stinging nettles, smell of freshly cut grass, dung, cow, sheep, fields, stream, private, peace, joy in nature, capture the moment, garden, luck, wistfulness, hopefulness, diamonds, lungs, heartbeat, beat, beat, beat, pumping blood, food, bugs, drink, nutrients, sustaining, life cycle of life, not polluted, free, wild, sight, image, fractured view point, captured imagery, photography through the lens, vivid, luscious, exciting, amazing, nectar, magical, knowing that life exist and continues, we are like dragonflies only bright for a season, a moment, loss, gain, a never ending cycle of life, purest simplistic, grace, speed, stillness, mystical, delightful, a sliver of joy, hope, preservation, Garden of England.

In creating this text I found this quite cathartic, furthermore I have once again looked at the definitions of Form, Frame and Fracture as nouns and verbs.

When looking at the word Frame as a verb the definition that I felt related to continuing this studio task was to contrive, devise, or compose, as a plan, law, or poem: to frame a new constitution.

I have extended the imagery of sections of the wing, by adding colour as a wash.  Furthermore I have cut out sections of the pieces that I have made, attempting to create a window through the pieces.

To add to these images i have
added a colour wash to a few of the pieces.

Since creating these pieces I have been looking at these images I have spent time with them, and laying them out, and I considered how I could develop the images. I wanted to construct something out of these pieces so I am going to use a dryer and the washing line I know this seems a bit basic, but considering how Hew Locke uses materials and objects I felt it was a good option.
I looked at the definitions of Form and the one of interest is to ‘Place in order; arrange, organise.’
